About a month or two ago I was in my local Barnes and Noble checking out books. I wasn't really there to buy anything, but I happened across the pretty cover of The Way of Shadows, by Brent Weeks, and thought that since it was only seven dollars, I'd give it a try. If it sucked, I could just return it anyways.
I read it that night, and went back for the second and third.
Brent did an amazing job constructing developed, interesting characters that you had interest in. The world he created was believable, to a point because of all the magic of course. I fully recommend The Night Angel Trilogy, that first series of his I read, to anyone who actually reads this blog. It is absolutely captivating.
Once I'd finished all three of those books, I hopped over to his website to see if there was anything else of his for me to read. I discovered that he was no longer writing Night Angel books, at least not for the moment, because he'd stopped to write another series. I was kind of upset at this, at first. Mainly because he left the Night Angel series open for continuation, and I really wanted to read more. But I got over it, expecting that if The Black Prism was written even half as well as The Night Angel I would love it.
I picked up a copy of Black Prism a few weeks ago, and took a little bit longer to read it than the other books. (My dog died.) But it was at least as good as his other series. Probably better.
The thing about Brent that makes him such a good author is that he ties everything together. He doesn't mention needless facts, he doesn't give you unwanted detail. He gives you a perfect blend of well timed flashbacks and highly detailed action scenes, and a deep plot interlaced with everything else. It's almost magical to read something so well constructed.
I don't want to divulge many details of the actual books, since I honestly think you should just go out and pick them up at a store. So, do it.
Feel free to comment questions about the books, I'll answer anything I didn't cover. Which I know is a lot.
